Arnica Recovery Massage Oil
Botanical craftsmanship for moments of comfort and relaxation.

The Care Behind the Craft
This oil began at home.
My husband spent long days working in retail, often coming home tired and uncomfortable. I wanted to create something I could reach for during the quiet moments when I would massage his back at the end of the day.
What began as a personal formulation gradually evolved. I explored different botanical ingredients, adjusted the blend, and eventually reformulated it without CBD as regulations changed.
Through those changes, my intention remained the same: to create a thoughtfully crafted massage oil with a smooth, lasting glide and a gentle, comforting experience.
It began as something I made for someone I love. That care remains part of every batch.
Inside the Botanical Blend
At the heart of this massage oil are three botanical infusions I prepare by hand. Each has its own history in traditional herbal care, and each was selected with intention.
Arnica — A Botanical Rooted in Tradition
Arnica has a long history in European herbal traditions, particularly in preparations used externally for bruising, sprains, and muscle soreness. Its association with physical comfort has made it a familiar botanical in traditional massage and body-care preparations.
That history is part of what drew me to arnica when developing this oil. I was interested in botanicals traditionally selected for the care of tired, overworked bodies, and arnica became a central part of my formulation.
I prepare my own arnica-infused oil using fully dried botanical material, a carrier oil, and gentle heat. The finished infusion is then incorporated into my massage oil alongside other thoughtfully selected ingredients.
A note about traditional use: Historical herbal practices are an important part of understanding why I select certain ingredients, but traditional use does not establish that my finished massage oil treats bruises, injuries, muscle pain, or any medical condition. Research on particular arnica preparations cannot automatically be applied to this handcrafted formulation.
Comfrey Leaf — A Long Tradition of External Herbal Care
Few plants have a traditional reputation quite like comfrey.
For centuries, comfrey held a distinctive place in European herbal practice, earning the nickname knitbone because of its historical association with caring for injuries and damaged tissues. Its leaves were commonly incorporated into poultices, compresses, and other external herbal preparations.
One of the interesting things about comfrey is how its reputation developed around the plant’s relationship with skin and tissue care. It was valued not simply as an aromatic herb, but as a practical botanical that people turned to in their everyday traditions of tending to the body.
In my Apothecary, I work specifically with fully dried comfrey leaves, rather than roots. I prepare them as an oil infusion using a carrier oil and gentle heat, incorporating the strained infusion into the botanical foundation of this massage blend.
A note about traditional use and safety: Comfrey’s historical applications explain its place in herbal traditions, but they do not establish that my finished massage oil promotes tissue repair, accelerates healing, or treats injuries or medical conditions. Comfrey also naturally contains pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PAs), compounds associated with liver toxicity. Using dried leaves rather than roots does not guarantee their absence. The safety of this particular infusion has not been established through testing.
St. John’s Wort — A Tradition of Botanical Comfort
St. John’s wort has a centuries-long history in European herbal traditions. Although many people recognize it for its use in preparations associated with mood and emotional well-being, the plant also has a longstanding place in traditional topical herbal care.
Historically, St. John’s wort-infused oils have been used externally for minor wounds, skin irritation, and discomfort associated with sensitive or irritated nerves. Herbalists have traditionally valued these preparations in the care of areas experiencing tenderness or discomfort.
That history interested me when developing this massage oil. I wanted to explore botanicals with longstanding traditions of external use, particularly those associated with caring for tired, uncomfortable bodies.
I prepare my own St. John’s wort infusion using fully dried botanical material, a carrier oil, and gentle heat. This handcrafted infusion becomes one part of the finished massage blend, alongside arnica, comfrey leaf, and other carefully selected ingredients.
A note about traditional use: These historical applications explain why St. John’s wort has been valued in herbal practice, but they do not establish that my finished massage oil treats nerve pain, injuries, skin conditions, or any medical condition. Evidence from studies of specific St. John’s wort preparations cannot automatically be applied to this formulation.
Thoughtfully Selected Supporting Ingredients
Alongside the handcrafted botanical infusions, this formula includes menthol, camphor, and beta-caryophyllene. Menthol is known for its characteristic cooling sensation, while camphor has a distinctive aromatic profile and is associated with warming and cooling sensations in topical preparations. Beta-caryophyllene is a naturally occurring compound found in botanicals such as black pepper and cloves. I selected these ingredients as part of the formulation’s evolution, paying particular attention to the sensory character of the finished massage oil.
The Aromatic Experience
The aroma of this massage oil is led by menthol, giving the blend its distinctive fresh, cooling character.
To balance that prominent note, I incorporate a combination of tangerine, wild orange, lime, and black pepper essential oils. The citrus oils introduce bright, uplifting aromatic notes, while black pepper contributes a subtle warmth and depth.
Together, these ingredients create a more rounded fragrance without overpowering the character of the original botanical blend.
I believe aroma is part of the massage experience. A thoughtfully balanced fragrance can contribute to the atmosphere of relaxation, making even a few quiet moments of massage feel a little more intentional.
The Massage Experience
A little time to unwind. A comforting touch. A moment to yourself.
A thoughtful massage is about more than the oil itself. It’s an opportunity to slow down, settle into the moment, and enjoy the simple comfort of caring for your body.
Arnica Recovery Massage Oil is formulated with a smooth, effortless glide that allows hands to move comfortably across the skin. The oil absorbs gradually, providing lasting slip for an unhurried massage without the need for constant reapplication.
As the oil is worked into the skin, a subtle warming sensation may develop, adding another layer to the massage experience. The warmth is gentle rather than intense, allowing the experience to feel soft and comforting.
With continued massage, the oil absorbs into the skin without pilling or leaving a noticeable residue when fully worked in. For longer sessions, a little additional oil may be needed to maintain the desired glide.
Whether enjoyed as part of a professional massage or a quiet moment of care at home, this blend was created to make the experience feel intentional, comforting, and restorative.
How to Use & What to Know
A Little Goes a Long Way
For a full-back massage, I typically begin with two to four pumps of oil, adjusting the amount as needed to maintain a comfortable glide.
The oil is designed to spread smoothly across the skin and absorb gradually during massage. Longer sessions may call for a little additional oil.
What to Expect
During massage, a subtle warming sensation may develop as the oil is worked into the skin. This warmth is generally gentle in my experience, although individual sensations and skin sensitivity can vary.
Because the blend absorbs gradually, an oily finish may remain if more is applied than can be comfortably worked into the skin.
Important Precautions
For adult external use only. Avoid contact with eyes and other sensitive areas. Do not apply to broken, irritated, or damaged skin.
This formulation contains botanical infusions and aromatic ingredients that may cause allergic reactions or skin sensitivities in some individuals. Arnica belongs to the Asteraceae (daisy) family, so individuals with known sensitivities to plants in this family should avoid use. Review the complete ingredient list before applying, particularly if you have known botanical, fragrance, or nut allergies.
If redness, itching, burning, rash, or other discomfort develops, discontinue use and seek medical advice if symptoms persist.
Keep out of reach of children. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, consult a qualified healthcare professional before considering use.
External Heat
This formulation contains menthol and camphor, which can increase the risk of skin irritation or burns when combined with external heat. Use of heating pads, heated massage tables, or other heating devices has not been safety-evaluated with this formulation.
